Today I left my classes feeling extremely lucky. I got to spend the morning giggling and making music with parents and their adorable babies. I was a teacher for 7 years, and after I quit my job to spend more time with my kids I struggled with that decision for months. I made the decision because I didn't like the idea of leaving my kids to spend time with other people's kids. Even though I'm doing that now in a way, I do it for a few hours a week rather than 40+. But this morning as I reflected in the (heavenly silent) drive home, I realized how much I enjoy this work because it allows me to keep the parts of teaching that were awesome, and do away with the parts that were frustrating. I loved teaching kids and imparting musical joy, but I didn't like the planning, stress, & report card aspect of it. This work I do now is relatively stress-free, its creative and I love engaging with our community through social media, and it brings me great purpose to bring music to young children and moms in my community. When I first entertained the idea of quitting my job it seemed so extreme, but now that I'm two years into this little business it's my new normal. And the way I see it is, I never would have known what this is like without trying it, whereas I can always go back to teaching if I want to. So after a year of what felt like upheaval and change with the new addition of my daughter, and navigating motherhood and freelance work, today it finally felt like I was right where I was supposed to be. Making music, laughing, and spending time with other kids as well as my own.
